Charging guide: What is the difference between P1 and HAN?
P1 and the HAN port are the designation of the physical output of your smart meter. This output enables a consumption meter (e.g. an Equalizer) to read the electricity consumption in the home or building in real time. The HAN port is initially closed and you contact your network provider to open it. The P1 port is normally open. No consumption meter will not work with a closed port as it receives both data (the power consumption) and power to operate the real time meter.
Your smart meter (AMS meter) will usually have either a P1 port or a HAN port. This mostly depends on where you are. In Norway, it is most common to have a HAN port, while smart meters in Sweden and the Benelux region usually have P1. Some countries have a mixture of both. If you are unsure, we recommend that you contact your internet provider.
The difference between the HAN and the P1 port lies in the communication method they use. The most obvious difference between HAN and P1 is that they use different cables to send data to a consumption meter. In the HAN port, RJ45 cable is used, while P1 uses RJ12 .

The P1 port is a slightly smaller port also called a Dutch P1 port. The same form factor used for desktop phones. | RJ45 is the same cable as your internet cable. This will fit the Norwegian HAN port. |
